The Bicycle Effect: Empowering Young Women

A bike program in India solved the practical problem of transport, but also gave education incentives and ended up expanding the horizons of thousands of young girls. School drop out rates decreased immensely and taking their life in their own hands has left them feeling empowered and full of hope. The initiative is part of a larger “gender program” in India, but it can serve as a model of how to make social change happen just on two-wheels. Can a bike initiative like this work in Miami? Entrepreneurs who want to change the world have got to be a little crazy. At least that’s what they think at the Unreasonable Institute.Their name derives from the George Bernard Shaw quote, “All progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Each year they unite 25 entrepreneurs for a 6 week program in Boulder so they can meet, learn, and get their world changing ideas off the ground with the networking and capital they need. Learn more about how they do this at their official site.
